Pool Chemicals Hardness

pool chemicals hardness
My pool store told me this: 1.drain pool half way or 2.shock with 45lbs. I drained it & refilled. Now what?

My pool is very cloudy but blue. We had mustard algae and use a copper based chemical to kill it. We have already spent about $80 on chemicals and now my pool store is telling me after draining it I have to start all over. I know there has to be an easier way. My pool is showing no free chlorine, ph 6.8-7.2, hardness is 0, total alkalinity is 180, cyanuric acid is 30-50. I have calcium hyperchloride and sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrion shocks. I also have a clarifier. I just don’t know what to do at this point Can you add too much shock to the pool? I am new at this…PLEASE HELP!

Here is the solution.

Your pH is currently too low. Bring it up to around 7.8.

Next, go buy some Alum (Aluminum sulfate) and broadcast it at the rate listed on the tub, into your water with the pump off. Add a liquid floculant at this time.

Turn your multiport valve to recirculate, and run for four hours.

Turn off the pump, and let the water sit for 12 hours.

Turn your multiport valve to “vacuum to waste” and VERY SLOWLY vacuum the fuzzy carpet at the bottom of your pool.

THEN, refill what water you have lost, use the clarifier, and return the multiport to “filter”.

I promise this is the best way top handle this situation.

THEN add one pound of Cal-Hypo to the water for every ten thousand gallons.

I know where you went wrong. The chemical that you use for killing the Algea (a form of Sodium Bromide) absolutely destroys chlorine levels. It USES the chlorine to produce its algae killing effect. You have to shock your pool within HOURS of using it, or you will not have a residual. ALSO, be sure to put any pool tools you use in the water when doing this sort of algae kill, otherwise you could reintroduce the algae into fresh water the next time you use the tool.

Your calcium level can’t be at 0… water will pull calcium out of the plaster in order to have some residual, try retesting.

Sand cannot vanish. anything that would cause sand to vanish from a filter would eat flesh away before it would eat sand away.
