Swimming Pool Chemicals Enjoy

Why does vinegar taste incredibly bad only to me?

I know there are differences in people’s tastes when it comes to food, but I can’t understand how one ingredient can taste good/neutral to others, but vomit-inducingly disgusting to me.

So why is it that everyone I know like eating food that has vinegar in it, and enjoy pickles, mayo, ketchup, mustard and basically 75% of all prepackagedfood (that all have vinegar in them), but for me anything that has a tiny hint of vinegar tastes like gasoline? I am physically unable to eat hamburgers or any fast food with mayo in it because of this. I mean, it literally tastes like some hazardous industrial chemical. All it takes is a teaspoon of vinegar in a swimming pool and the water tastes incredibly bad. For a long time I was wondering how anyone could eat something that tastes so horrible, but I guess there’s something wrong with me and my tastebuds.

TTL-DR Is it possible to have some mutated tastebuds that distort the taste of a specific chemical?

I can’t stand vinegar either (or mayo – it’s disgusting!), so you’re not alone.
Everyone has different taste buds, so you’re not weird.
My mom can’t stand anything with vinegar either – and she REALLY hates garlic. Like even if she eats a piece of bread that was cut with a knife used to slice garlic, she can taste it and feels the needs to vomit. And she won’t let me put garlic in the food processor, because she claims that she’ll taste it on everything. I think it’s weird, since she’s Italian.
So yeah, you’re not alone in the hating types of food thing.
