Opening Pool Chemicals Needed

How to properly open your pool?

I moved into my new home in late September so the previous owner had already winterized it and closed it. I have never had a pool of my own and am not sure how to go about opening it for the summer? Not sure if there is a standard procedure or if it varies but I’d like to get an idea what chemicals I will need and what to do when. Planning on opening it in the next week so any direction would be great.

If it has a cover you need to get a little pump and pump the water off. Try a fountain pump. Remove the cover, scrub with bleach rinse dry and fold.

Then add about 5-6 gallons of chlorine to the pool. Now start netting all the leaves out that you can.

Remove the plugs in the outlets in the pool and skimmer. Replace the freeze plugs in the heater and pump, hook up the chlorinator, take a look around and you should see how it hooks up.

Make sure all the lines are connected.

Put your plugs back into the filter.

Start filling from your hose. When the water reachers your skimmer you should start your pump in the backwash mode. Hopefully it runs first try. If the pump moter does not immediately start turn it off and free up the pump using a wrench where the impeller comes through the back end of the motor.

Backwash some water out to clear out the lines, then shut down the pump, put into operational mode and start up.

Go to a pool store and get some algemiacin and put in according to directions. Also take a baggie full of water to the pool store and have them analyze the water and recommend what you need to add to get your water properly balanced.

If you have a ladder go ahead and install, it’s pretty straight forward.

If you have a light DO NOT TURN IT ON UNLESS IT’S UNDER WATER. Usually there is just 1 or 2 screws holding the light in.

Remember, a pool is just a container of water with pipes to a pump which pushes the water through the filter and through the heater and back into the pool. Keep your PH between 7.3-7.6 and your chlorine at 3ppm and you should be good.
