Should I touch up my own roots?

I have light brownish hair that I have gotten highlighted like once a year for a few years now. My roots have grown out pretty bad and I’m just wanting some people opinions on this. I’ve been wondering if I get my hair colored mostly blonde, but not completely died, would I be able to buy coloring at Walgreens or target and touch up my roots on my own when needed. I really want to get it blonder but I don’t want to have to get it colored so often and spend so much money getting it done of the regular. Opinions please?

I’ve been colorng my own hair for …….55 years? OMG!! Root touch ups are difficult with highlighted hair as you only touch up the highlights. Fine if up front, but if to side or back, difficult. Then you have to separate the highlighted area with foil so as not to spill onto uncolored surrounding hair. If you have a friend do this for you, no sweat. After 20 minutes you wet your hair, pull off the foil and voila! I’m trying to figure out how you go mostly blonde without an all over dye……is that a super frost?
The more you change your color from natural, the more often you’ll need to tend to roots. For me, even at this advanced age, it is still every 4 f-ing weeks. Closer to natural color, you can stretch it out to 6-8 weeks. Start to finish is 40 minutes, but still……..

I really urge you to think it over carefully. The more you change the color the more you become a slave to it. Also you must really be careful with application and timing. When I was playing with the ash blondes, if I left the solution on too long, my hair took on a green tint. Of course chemicals in household water and swimming pools also create interesting surprises.
