Getting Married “Down Under”

How to get married in nsw?

First you need to provide your birth certificate or passport in English, or an official translation of the document from another language.

Every year, hundreds of couples from the UK travel to the other side of the world, or as many refer to it – ‘Down-Under’ to get married. Perhaps it has always been your dream to visit Australia, to see the spectacular Sydney Opera House right on Sydney Harbour, to dive through the beautiful blue waves on Bondi Beach or to travel into the red centre and visit Uluru – the true Aboriginal name for Ayres Rock and see the sun rising over its massive height, turning the rock into a huge red and golden spectacular?

Perhaps your honeymoon dream has been to cruise the Whitsunday Passage calling in at all the islands along the way or to bask in the warm tropical sunshine up at Cairns and Port Douglas in North Queensland? Perhaps the attraction for you are the famous vineyards of the Margaret River south of Perth in Western Australia or the stark white sands of Broome on the north west reaches of this vast and wonderful land?

Each year Civil Marriage Celebrant Wendy Bull marries hundreds and hundreds of couples who travel to Sydney – to escape the Winter ills and chills of the UK, and to escape the enormous costs of the large full on, family wedding. Instead couples choose to combine their romantic wedding day with a wonderful and memorable honeymoon to follow, Down-Under.

So where can you get married?
That’s an easy one to answer – you can get married absolutely anywhere in Australia, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week there are no restrictions as to where or when you can get married. You don’t have to get married in a certain registered venue – there’s no such thing in Australia.

Two firm favourites to get married in Sydney are both on Bondi Beach with the water lapping at your feet, or in the beautiful and picturesque Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens which overlook the Opera House on Sydney Harbour with the Harbour Bridge as your backdrop in the west and city skyline to the south – these are easy choices to make. The gardens are right in the city only 5-10 minutes by taxi from most hotels.

Perhaps you might like to choose getting married while sailing around Sydney Harbour on a yacht or standing on the headlands of North Head overlooking the sparkling Tasman Sea, looking out towards New Zealand. If you have your heart set on a chapel wedding, there’s one right in the city. Alternatively weddings are performed in the Celebrant’s apartment or in the couple’s hotel suite or hotel function room. There are lots of lovely spots along the foreshores of Sydney Harbour looking across at the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, or perhaps you might like to hire a small pavilion in the Chinese Gardens of Friendship at Darling Harbour then wander along afterwards to sample one of the many restaurants, cafes or trendy bars to celebrate! Some choose to do it ‘their way’ and take a helicopter flight whilst zooming over Sydney city skyline with its Harbour and beaches down below. For the whole family I have even hired a DC3. Sydney Harbour Bridge is another option and a great attraction, or on the steps of the Opera House. Perhaps you prefer to be up at the top of the Sydney Tower with its amazing views stretching right out across the western side of Sydney towards the Blue Mountains.Any venue option can be organised and hired for you by the Celebrant – whatever your budget there is always something for you in Sydney to make your day a very special one indeed.

So many honeymoon options…
Do you wish to also spend most of your honeymoon time in Sydney?
A huge hint of advice here – do not hire a car in Sydney or in any large city, unless you are familiar with the usual city CBD road complex (they’re very busy places, as you find in all large cities world-wide). Public transport by bus, train or ferry are the way to go, and daily or weekly passes are easily obtainable and very economical. Just jump off any bus, train or ferry and hop on another by simply showing your pass. And while you’re having that once in a life-time honeymoon, visit the world famous Aquarium at Darling Harbour within walking distance from the city, sample from the many trendy cafes and bars in and around the city and Darling Harbour, or visit the Taronga Park Zoo right beside Sydney Harbour – just take a ferry. Take a train (the 8.23am from Central Station) or a guided bus tour (highly recommended) to the Blue Mountains to see the 3 Sisters, the famous rock formations at Katoomba – there is so much to see and do in and out of Sydney while visiting. A piece of advice here – never ‘book’ a taxi in the city – just wave one down and hop in. No point in getting lost on your wedding day or when sight-seeing!

For something a little different, why not experience an outback trip to a sheep & cattle station or join a National Park tour?

So many choices!

Your wedding dream can be very easily turned into reality as it’s also a very easy process to get married in Australia. What are the legal procedures?
Again, very easy. The Civil Marriage Celebrant will send you the ‘Notice of Intended Marriage’ which you must complete and have witnessed no less than a calendar month prior to the marriage but obviously most couples do this many months, sometimes years before they travel, generally as soon as they have decided to get married Down-Under.

You then simply get your signatures witnessed on this form, either at Australia House in The Strand, London or by a Notary which can be located through any lawyers or solicitors firm in all area of the UK. You then send this form to the Celebrant for lodgement. The other legal requirements are quite straight forward, you must be over the age of 18 years and either single/divorced/widowed. (Divorce and death documents or your former spouse must be shown to the celebrant prior to marriage).

Two witnesses must attend the ceremony – the photographer can even be a witness!
After your wedding the Celebrant will register your marriage and will arrange for your Registered Marriage Certificate from the Government to be mailed to you or if time permits, you can collect it yourselves the next working day and take it home with you, as legal proof of marriage. And in case you’re wondering – your marriage in Australia is 100% legal and is legally recognised world-wide, and you do not even have to notify the UK authorities of your marriage upon return, as you will be legally registered here in Australia, a British Commonwealth country.

What can we have for our ceremony?
Often asked questions are, ‘what can we have for our ceremony’ and ‘how long will it take?’
Most celebrants will send you a comprehensive Ceremony Guide from which to choose your own very special wording. There are selections of verses and vows – again the choice is yours.
Alternatively, you may wish to write your own vows and exchange of ring words.

You can either opt for a traditionally worded ceremony or a contemporary one – you may like to include some of your own traditions and practices and can even include spiritual or religious wording.

A Celebrant can perform any type of ceremony you want, from Rose, Candle & Sand ceremonies to either a religious or non-religious ceremony, this is entirely up to you what you choose to have. Many couples from the UK wish to incorporate Celtic Hand Fasting into their ceremony, an age-old tradition where a binding is tied and knotted around the couples hands – this is where the words ‘tying of the knot’ comes from. Many choose to have this and often, with the sounds of a professional bagpiper playing in the background. Most ceremonies are not too long, around 15-25 minutes but again, this decision is yours….it can be as short or as long as you wish.

What needs to be organised in advance?
The Celebrant will book the place of marriage of your choice for you, for the date and time you wish to get married. Most couples arrive a couple of days prior to the ceremony, to recover from jet-lag, get their bearings and meet with the Celebrant to finalise any paperwork.

There is generally a fee which must be paid to local councils for getting married in a park, garden or on a beach, but there are also a few wonderful free spots which don’t cost a cent. The Celebrant will also organise a photographer if you wish to have one. Small 1-2 hours packages are usually the idea here, shots taken throughout the ceremony and then afterward, in and around the place of marriage.Photos and CDs can be delivered to the couple prior to leaving, if spending a few extra days in Sydney after the wedding. The Celebrant can also arrange for a bouquet and button hole, make-up and hair, a bridal car, champagne, a wedding cake, a live trio, bagpipes and so on.Of course all these are totally optional but for most and the absolutely budget conscious, you don’t need any of the trimmings whatsoever – just be here! The Celebrant, the 2 witnesses (arranged for you), and yourselves, under the Australian sun.

Of course there is no need to bring or buy a wedding gown or suit, most couples who come to Australia from the UK just get married in casual dress, something which is easy to pack and something which you can wear along the way. Some have even just worn their shorts and T. shirts – it’s your day so wear whatever you wish. And there are no restrictions in Australia, of what time you can get married as you can marry any time day or night 24/7. And there is no waiting period – providing you have completed all the necessary paperwork with the Celebrant you can get married the minute you put foot on Australian soil.

Once I married a couple in the Arrival Lounge at Sydney’s International Airport as they were getting a connecting flight straight out west to Uluru and they wanted to arrive there ‘married’.
Another couple chose right on midnight with flickering candles under the southern stars as this signified the time of their marriage proposal.Another favourite is under an Australian Gum tree with kookaburras – you’ll get this in the Royal Botanic Gardens even, and another favourite is sailing across Sydney Harbour.

An intimate wedding or a ‘family & friends’ occasion?
Often whole families come along – many couples from the UK bring families and their children with them. Parents often come too (they’re great baby-sitters) and sometimes even the grandparents fly in as well (also great baby-sitters). There are some good apartment style accommodation available right in the heart of the city which makes it an easy idea and base for families. It is often a wonderful reason (or is it an excuse?) for parents and family members to fulfil their dream of travelling to Australia and to combine it with a beautiful, cost-effective family wedding.

If you have friends already living here who are attending the ceremony, they can act as the witnesses, however witnesses can be arranged for you by the Celebrant. Some couples have even decided to immigrate after experiencing Australia – they can’t resist the friendliness, the warm sunshine and their future prospects.

One most memorable wedding I officiated in the Royal Botanic Gardens, the bride and groom from Sussex had no guests – just the 2 legal witnesses which had been arranged for them. We were about to start the ceremony when suddenly 4 people came running across the lawn. You guessed it, both parents had travelled to Australia and sprung the big surprise! There were tears and laughter, intermingled with happiness and the wedding proceeded as planned. We popped a few champagne corks afterward just as the sun was setting in the west behind the Opera House – what a day to remember!

The majority of couples though who come to Australia to get married just prefer an intimate wedding ceremony on their own, to escape the often huge wedding drama and generally, no-one back home knows. After the ceremony and photo shoot, the couple go to the restaurant of their choice and spend a romantic evening wining and dining in one of the many 5 star restaurants overlooking Sydney Harbour, and upon their return to the UK they have a surprise and relaxed party to celebrate with their family and friends.

What’s the first step?
Convinced to travel Down-Under and get married? Well, it’s now time to organise your airline bookings and hotel accommodation. Your local travel agent will help with some great deals available or go on-line for cheaper options.

And then of course, most importantly, contact the Celebrant to book in your day and time for the ceremony and then, start packing your bags. C’mon we’re waiting for you, Down-Under. Under the lazy, warm, blue Australian Summer skies.

Digital Signage Trending Beyond Fad

Life was certainly less connected before smartphones. For example, before most people knew that an Apple was more than a tasty fruit, I was fortunate (or unfortunate depending on your perspective) to have had one of the first smartphones on the market, a Toshiba Pocket PC. If you have never heard of this product, that’s probably because it was made about the time you were born or otherwise too young to care.

What do I remember about this phone? Nothing glamorous. It was slow, clunky to operate, prone to glitches, required rebooting about as often as Windows 95, even crashing with the blue screen of death on occasion!

And when I think about this a bit more, I realize the same could be said about legacy digital signage systems.

It just so happens I was involved with the nascent digital signage industry in the 90s, the same decade the original smartphones were invented. Yes, when I think about digital signage in the 90s, I can easily conclude it too was slow, clunky to operate, prone to glitches, required rebooting about as often as Windows 95, even crashing with the blue screen of death on occasion!

However, if I were to sum up digital signage Sydney starting in the 90s right up to the last few years, one would have to say that despite all of its quirks and limitations, it was glamorous. How about you? How did you feel about digital signage in its infant years? Try this; think back to the very first time you saw a flat panel television. You were likely spellbound with its thin stature and seductive HD resolution. If not spellbound, maybe you remember being gagged by its price with those early plasma panels costing over $10K each.

Peering into 2014 and beyond, I think we can safely say that digital signage is beyond glamorous-it’s a bona fide medium-at least for advertisers. For example, at the 2013 Digital Place-based Advertising Association (DPAA) summit held in New York City, the panelists agreed that place-based advertising (think digital sign media) would continue to rise through 2017 (up from 5% to as much as 25%). “I think place-based will outgrow [other forms of media] because it lends itself to targeting customers,” said Chris Paul, General Manager AOD of VivaKi. “It is just a matter of technology, terminology, and industry understanding being in sync before we see dramatic changes.”

What kind of dramatic changes is Paul alluding to? Possibly, the 2013 ANA/Nielsen Survey has the answer. The survey states that in three years, the importance of integrated multi-screen campaigns is expected to dramatically increase, from 20 percent of digital media purchases today to a projected 50 percent by 2016.

We might consider at this point the attributes that would lead to such optimism on spending. According to the survey, spending increases on multi-screen campaigns will require three main things:

  • Verification that advertising achieved the desired result (noted by 71 percent of respondents)
  • Consistent metrics across screens (61 percent)
  • Verification that advertising was delivered to the right audience (59 percent)

Are you one of those that still think digital signage is a fad? Heads up! According to the AdNation News article, Digital Place-based Media, What’s Ahead?, there are strong reasons to believe it’s here to stay. The article reported a case study related by David Krupp, CEO of Kinetic, who shared information about Degree Women’s “DO MORE” antiperspirant campaign.

“By focusing place-based media in gyms, likely to be seen by women while they were working out, the study concluded that consumers had better recall (56%) and a stronger intent to purchase (62%) than the control group. Krupp described Degree as ‘the right brand for the right environment’ because in this place-based campaign, it reached a large scale of consumers, who were in the right mindset to recall the product.”

So digital signage went from glamorous to a medium to a business almost overnight. It started out as an eccentric technology with a glamorous flair. Eccentric because no one was exactly sure what to do with it and how to best use it-plus it was unfriendly to use and awkward to manage.

But glamour alone does not build markets. Results build markets because investors put their money where opportunities look promising, and digital signage has been adept at getting results. Looking forward to 2014 and beyond, we can now make an educated guess at where digital signage is heading, and we need to look no further than the popularity of smartphones, online gaming devices, tablets and the Internet itself.

What do these popular technologies all have in common? The single thread that ties everything together comes in the form of engagement. Digital signage of yesteryear behaved more like our parents’ TV-it broadcast a message to its likely viewers without a plan for interaction. There’s nothing wrong with this, of course, but the big opportunity for digital signage going forward has more to do with engagement. Engagement is the way forward for digital media of all kinds, including advertising, branding, infotainment, videos, movies, gaming, and social media at large.

Please comment and let me know where you see digital signage going in 2014 and beyond.

HVAC Tips, Tricks And Techniques You Need

24 hour electrician Brisbane are currently fixing the damaged wiring in my home to keep my family safe. HVAC services are not things that many people are familiar with. This can cause problems when a cooling or heating issue pops up. The good news is that the material below can help any hapless homeowner identify the very best HVAC professionals around.

Before making that repair phone call, make sure you know the specifics about your particular system. Look for the model and brand number. In this way, you can be sure your repair person has all vital information.

If your HVAC is running into problems, check out each room in your house before calling for assistance. Pay attention to which areas of the house are warm and which ones are cool. If you do this, it will be a great help to the future contractor, who will now be able to quickly locate the problem issue.

When you cut the grass, don’t cover the outdoor units with their clippings. Make sure the grass does not get in your unit. This includes grass clippings and leaves.

During the fall, leaves can gather around your HVAC. Cleaning your unit is very important for its effectiveness. When the fan becomes obstructed, you will lose out on quality air.

If you want things to be more efficient, get new units outside or have your current one moved into the shade. The unit will have to do less work cooling this air.

Make sure you have your HVAC system checked at least twice a year. Most homeowners choose to have their unit inspected during the spring and the fall months. This helps prepare for the coming weather changes of summer and winter. A quick check is worth it to avoid problems down the road.

If you can, install double-paned windows throughout your home. They help cool air remain inside your home, effectively cutting back on how much you have to run your air conditioner. Your home will also stay warmer in the winter.

If you want your energy costs to go down, have the heating an cooling system you own serviced every year at least. The motor should be checked, the parts oiled and the freon levels inspected. This will help keep your system performing at maximum efficiency.

Do not allow your house to get extremely hot. Your average AC unit can only reduce the temperature in your home by about 20 degrees in a normal span of time. If the temperature in your home rises to 100 degrees F or higher, cooling it will only drop the temperature to 80 degrees F. Depending on what the humidity is, this may not be cool enough to be a safe temperature to sleep at when recovering from the harsh summer heat.

In order to select an HVAC contractor that you can trust, it pays to invest some time researching a few prospective companies and checking their reputations. Check them out at the BBB and look for reviews posted by former customers. Take these steps to ensure you make wise choices.

Icing up is common in air conditioners. Freezes also occur in your drain line. These freezes are easily confused as leaks to the untrained eye. If this happens, put your thermostat over to fan. The fan setting can help melt some of the ice, but you should still call a professional to check your unit out.

Look for calculators online to help you determine the size of unit you need for your home. If you buy something too large it won’t be efficient as it cools the same. Use the manual to determine what size is right for you.

Figure out how long the HVAC company you choose has been in business. Fly-by-night companies are those you want to avoid. Hiring a contractor who is just starting out can be risky.

Ask your friends and relations for their HVAC contractor recommendations. Find someone that has a lot of quality work under their belt. This is also a great way to get names of companies that should be avoided.

If your system isn’t working as it should, test its ducts for leaks. Your utility company will usually test the unit for free or for a small fee. When you have leaks repaired, the testing has paid for itself.

Make an HVAC system run more efficiently by determining what direction your house faces. If your home is surrounded by strategically planted trees, they can often block out the morning sunlight. If there is less heat in the home from sunlight, then the HVAC will require less work to actually cool the home.

If you HVAC unit is making a clicking sound, check immediately for any debris that may have accumulated in it. Sometimes, debris will be the cause of the disturbance. Simply get rid of the debris to get rid of the issue. Check the fan and coil before you waste time contacting a professional.

Measure the area that needs cooling before buying a unit. You generally need 20 BTU for each square foot of room space. Make certain that you calculate using all of the rooms the unit will be treating.

Always make sure to get references from a contractor. Be sure previous customers got the service and value they expected. References ensure you don’t end up with a scammer.

No one enjoys working with a malfunctioning HVAC unit. But, if they do their homework beforehand, the process is not necessarily so grim. Keep the tips and tricks listed above handy, and you will have what you need to work on your HVAC system.

Local SEO Industry: Current Status and Future Projections

What Is SEO?
SEO specialist analyzes, reviews and implements changes to websites so they are optimized for search engines. This is a common question that most people especially those who are either new or not familiar with online marketing might be asking. SEO stands for search engine optimization. In layman’s language, it the process of capturing traffic from the search engines such as Google listings. Through this read, I am going to give you facts about the SEO business, current market status of SEO as well as the future projections in this field.

The Major SEO Players
Like any other industry in the world, the online SEO business has its players. This includes SEO local tools providers such as small digital agencies, SEO free lancers and web-designers among others.

Returns for SEO Players
The major reason as to why people get into business is to profit and expand their economic status. In the field of SEO business, the rates of returns are promising. This is because a recent research on SEO returns for a period of 12 months shows that at least all the players had something to take home. However, the returns are varying depending on a players’ hardwork and skills in the field. For example, according to this research, 34% of the interviewed SEOs said they received an amount less than $ 30,000 while another group of respondents, 17% said they received returns that were above $ 500,000.

From the above statistics, it is evident that the size of an organization played a role in the determination of the amount of returns received. It beats logic for one to expect a large organization to receive low amounts of returns and vice versa. In addition, the presence of part time SEOs as well as the entry of newbies into the market could have let to the low rates of turnover due to low operation capacity. However, it is hard to predict the course the SEO market is likely to take due to lack of clear shift in SEO earnings since the year 2011. However, the demand for local SEO services seems to be growing day in day out and this is attracting more players thereby tightening the competition among SEO service providers.

The Emerging Issues with the Current SEO Returns
With the above distribution of returns, several questions emerge. This includes the following:

• From the statistics, a large percentage of SEOs receive a low income something that suggests low pricing of SEO services.
• It is also possible that small and medium businesses do not understand the value of SEO services provided to them.
• The low SEO income earners, those who received less than $ 30,000 annual returns are also being doubted if they can provide quality services while earning that low.
• It is also unknown if most SEOs will still be in operation if their income remains static.

The Current SEOs Income Per Customer
Just like the annual SEO returns, SEO income per customer also varies. This is because there are those clients who would pay less than $100 a month while others will pay more than $5000 a month. This variation in income per client can be attributed to the type of services provided as well as the depth of services. The size of business a client is seeking SEO services for also play a role in determining the amount to be charged. For example, small businesses are charged less simply because their requirements are much smaller as compared to large multi-location franchise businesses.

Research also shows that some SEO service providers operate on high volume basis. Such SEOs provide simple SEO services at very low monthly rates. As a result, such SEO service providers end up having a high customer churn with a large dedicated network of sales team.

Similarly, some SEO service providers provide services that are more comprehensive in a much more professional manner customized according to the client thereby leading to a low number of clients.

Due to the above statistics, it therefore becomes essential for any SEO service provider in the current market to operate in a manner that matches his/her setup.

Handling Capacity of the Modern SEOs
Currently, SEOs are handling more clients as compared to the previous years. Statistics show that about 40% of the SEOs in the market handle at least 11 clients while 23% SEOs handle at least 21 clients. Such large numbers of clients to handle lead to more audits to be done, lots of tasks, research, reports and even more calls from the clients to be attended to. The high numbers of clients also demand a high level of efficiency so that the clients can be assured of quality services.

Market Structure for Most SEOs
SEOs have been using several marketing techniques to promote their businesses. Offline marketing channels such as word of mouth has been cited by most SEOs as the most effective marketing technique. This can be attributed to the trust level, business reputation as well as relationships build during the offline campaigns.

Alongside offline marketing, SEOs also practice online marketing such as the use of LinkedIn and social media. However, most SEOs have cited LinkedIn as the best option as compared to the social networks because it is better placed for lead generation and networking.

Services Offered by SEOs
Majority of the SEO players offer onsite optimization with 91% of the SEOs practicing this. Google+ optimization has also a good number of SEOs practicing it as 86% claimed to be offering this service to their clients. For affiliate marketing, only a small percentage (11%) of SEOs are offering this service to their clients.

Other services offered by SEOs:

• Content creation/optimization
• Link building
• Citation building
• Social media marketing
• Website development
• PPC
• Mobile site development
• Video marketing and mobile marketing.

The most demanded service by SEO clients is onsite marketing, while the least demanded service is affiliate marketing. The other services are somehow averagely demanded. However, most small and medium businesses do not understand the opportunities that video and mobile marketing can unlock to them and therefore tend not to use these services. SEOs therefore need to educate their clients on these marketing channels so that they can go for them.

When asked about the online SEO services SEOs feel are effective, 82% of them said that the General search is the most effective for generating leads. Local search appears to be the second best after 62% of the respondents in an SEO survey voted in its favor. PPC is the 3rd with 53% while social media is the 4th with 26%. Daily deals appear to be an appealing to most SEOs because only 1% voted in favor of it.

Tedious SEO Tasks
55% of the current SEOs in the market find link building to be the most tedious and time-consuming work. Others, though 15% only believe that content writing is the most tedious and time consuming task among all the tasks they do. It therefore emerges that to the 55% who find link building tedious, this task is also boring to them.

Future Projections
This is an outline of what we expect in the near future as far as SEO business is of concern.

Expansion of SEO Businesses
Compared to the previous years, SEO businesses has been growing and expanding steadily. Most SEOs (about 93%) are not only optimistic about expanding their businesses, but are also expecting to grow their business. In what seems to be a determined move to grow their businesses, most SEOs (82%) are willing to recruit more staff members so as to realize their desired levels of growth.

The social media is also expected to grow and be more effective even than the local directories. This is because most SEOs believe that social media can perform better because of recommendations from friends. Mobile usage is also expected to grow further and become relevant for local businesses.

Upsurge of Confidence in SEO Business
Unlike other businesses, the SEO business is showing a positive growth of confidence among the players. Despite this being a dynamic and innovative industry, most SEOs are still willing to recruit more staff to help drive their businesses ahead. 84% of the sampled SEOs in the SEO research are also optimistic that the SEO business is going to be more profitable starting this year 2013.

Confidence is also running high that if the SEO players increase the understanding of SEO/social among the business owners they serve in future, they will not only increase the business owners’ rate of investment, but also make them transfer their marketing budgets from other channels to the digital channels.

General Transcription Training – Tips For Finding the Right Course For You

If you love working with children and want to help them grow and develop then early childhood education courses Sydney is right one for you. I’ve seen a lot of people asking where they can get transcription training so they can start working at home as a general transcriptionist. There are a couple of different thoughts on the idea of transcription courses and if any do exist, are they worth the money to pay for them.

First, some people think that if you can type fast and listen to a recording well, that is all there is to being a general transcriptionist. And there are some people that are just naturals; they learn quickly how to use the software and other tools and they start right in on picking up work within a couple of days.

There are others who start in this business after getting their transcription training on the job with a former employer. They’ve already been doing transcription for a while and simply have to adapt to being home-based. In these two instances, paying for transcription courses isn’t really necessary.

But what if you’re just hearing about general transcription? You have a little above average typing skills and maybe some office experience and you’d just like to do this from home. So, how do you learn? Where can you find general transcription training? This is where you need to use your best judgement and decide if paying for a transcription course is really necessary.

Business Schools or Community College Courses

First, there really is no way to “train” to do general transcription. Business schools, community colleges, adult learning classes, etc. do not offer training in general transcription. So if you decide you need hands-on training in a formal setting, you’ll have to take a transcription training course in either medical transcription or legal transcription, then adapt what you’ve learned into the general field.

And why is that? Because general transcription is just that – General. It’s wide open to any industry and any individual. Unlike the medical and legal fields, there are no industry specific set ways of typing information into specific templates.

For instance, you may do a corporate transcript one day in one format, then do a personal journal the next day in another format. Every client will want their documents set up a different way. And in fact, the same client may want several different formats depending on what their needs are! You simply cannot use one or two different templates and expect them to fit across the board with all of your clients. It just doesn’t happen.

You may even get a client who says, ‘Just set it up how you think is best,’ and you get to be creative.

So where the medical and legal industries have certain criteria to meet with their documentation, there is no one right way or industry specific standard in the general transcription field because the field is wide open to anything that isn’t medical or legal.

But that’s not to say that getting transcription training in the medical or legal field won’t be a benefit. If you have the time and money or can get grants or loans for formal education, you absolutely will benefit from it. You’ll get a solid education in medical and legal terminology and you’ll learn how to listen and type at the same time. You’ll get used to different speaker accents and you’ll learn to use your software programs.

So absolutely, if you can do it and want to do it, check your local community college for transcription courses in one of those two fields.

Online Courses and Programs

Now, what if you don’t have the time to attend an in-class session during the week? Are there transcription courses or transcription programs available online?

Personally, I know of only a couple and I haven’t checked on them to see how thorough they are. But if you find a course online, there are a few things you will want to make sure it will cover. You will want to make sure that you will be shown a wide variety of sample document formats to type the recordings in. This will help you learn how to set up your word processing program. But keep in mind, these are just samples. No one can know what your specific clients may want.

The transcription training program needs to teach you the software and equipment you’ll need to get you to work as quickly and efficiently as you can to ensure you make the most money for your efforts.

A good transcription training course will also show you the steps you need to take to set up your own transcription business. You will need to be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as learning the new software you will need to pick up for your business procedures.

It should not only provide you with several sample digital audio files you can practice with, but also where to find more samples online, such as business podcasts to download and practice with. The transcription course you choose should also include a section that shows you how to record a webcast or podcast from the Internet using digital audio recording software, and a brief section on how to convert a physical cassette tape to a digital file.

And finally, you should learn how to use AutoCorrect and other keyboard shortcuts that will help you with your typing speed. So, while taking a formal course in transcription training can be costly without getting a college grant, finding a decent course online or simply learning by doing does not have to be expensive. With a little research and effort, you should be able to be finished and on your way to working from home in as little as a few months time.

And remember, having the freedom to work at home with a business that is growing in demand will provide you with the means to enjoy your family, avoid the stress of the average workplace, and give you a sense of pride that you can only achieve from being your own boss.

Waste Disposal and Waste Management

Rubbish removal Northern Beaches Sydney is either placing waste in water or onto land. Waste is taken to facilities where the waste is permanently contained and can prevent the release of pollutants into the environment. When disposing of solid waste, it often is placed on land in a landfill. Liquid waste is disposed of in injection wells that bury the refuse deep under ground. These wells are closely monitored to prevent leakage of harmful pollutants into the drinking water.

America alone generates nearly 208 million tons of solid waste per year and it is only expected to increase. Each person actually generates about 4.3 pounds of waste per day. Even though we have developed many different ways to dispose of refuse, there is still no absolutely safe way to remove and store trash.

History of Waste Disposal

The disposal of waste wasn’t always so carefully monitored. In the 18th century in England and France, people with carts were paid to carry trash out of town and dispose of it. Benjamin Franklin spurred the first municipal cleaning system in Philadelphia in 1757, making the dumping of trash in open pits a routine action. However, since then our trash has become more complicated and can’t simply be placed in a hole in the ground. We have many different types of trash and they must be disposed of properly to prevent contaminating the environment.

Types of Waste

There are many different types of waste and it is classified according to its physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. One of the major ways it is classified is by consistency; whether it is solid or liquid waste. To classify as a solid waste the material must contain less than 70% water. This classification often encompasses materials such as; household garbage, industrial wastes, mining waste, and some oilfield wastes. Liquid wastes must be less than 1% solid and is often from wastewater. Wastewater often contains high levels of dissolved salts and metals. Sludge is the final consistency classification; being somewhere between a liquid and a solid. Sludge often contains between 3 and 25% solids and the rest of it is made up of water dissolved materials.

The Federal government classifies waste into 3 categories; non-hazardous, hazardous, and Special wastes. Non-hazardous waste does not pose any immediate threat to health or the environment. This category includes household refuse. Hazardous wastes can either be ignitable/reactive or leachable. This means that hazardous waste is either flammable or has the potential to leach toxic chemicals. Special wastes have very specific guidelines to regulate it. Examples of Special Waste would be radioactive waste and medical waste.

How do we dispose of it?

There are a variety of ways that we dispose of trash and waste. Landfill use is the most common and can account for more than 90% of the countries municipal waste. However, landfills have been proven to contaminate drinking water in some regions. Landfills are the most cost-effective way of disposing; collection and transport represents 75% of the total cost involved. In modern landfills, the garbage is spread thin in compacted layers and then is covered by fresh earth. Landfills minimize pollution by lining the hole, contouring the fill, compacting and planting the top cover layer, diverting drainage, and by choosing sites that are not often affected by flooding or high groundwater levels. Clay is the best type of soil for a landfill because it is less permeable than other types of soil. Some materials that are disposed of in landfills can be solidified into solid materials like cement, fly ash, asphalt, or organic polymers.

Garbage is also disposed of using incinerators. This method is more costly but safer than a landfill. Modern incinerators can destroy nearly 99.9% of organic waste material. Many thermal processes recover energy from the solid waste that is incinerated. Pyrolysis, the process of chemical breakdown can produce a plethora of gasses and inert ash. Incinerators that burn garbage have been known to contaminate the air, soil, and water. Many communities near incinerators object to them for fear of possible harmful emissions.

Hazardous waste is also pumped into deep wells inside the earth. This is called waste injection. Many people are strongly opposed to this because it has caused explosions and even earthquakes in the past.

Organic materials that contain little or no heavy metals can be detoxified biologically. This is often done by composting and land farming; where waste materials are spread over a large area of land so that microbes can easily work to decompose them. However, hazardous wastes must be detoxified before they leach into the groundwater causing water contamination.

Recycling solid waste is not a new idea. In prehistoric times, metal tools were often melted down and recast. These days, recyclable materials are removed from municipal waste by shredding, magnetic separation of metals, screening, and washing. Composting involves the preparing of waste and breaking down the organic matter using aerobic microorganisms. This has lead to many municipalities and garbage collection agencies to require their customers to separate recyclable items from other types of household waste.

Another type of waste is livestock waste. It is created by large livestock companies. These generate more than 30 times the waste that humans do. Yearly, livestock waste accounts for 1.375 billion tons of refuse. The Environmental Products and Technologies Corporation has developed a system to reduce the amount of livestock waste. With their Closed Loop Waste Management System they can turn animal waste into commercial quantities of pathogen free, nutrient dense, soil building materials.

The Future of Waste

Currently, the best way to reduce the amount of waste that must be disposed of is to prevent its creation. Consumers must protest against the production of needless waste and push the movement for using and producing recycled products. These strategies to reduce waste may cost us more upfront but we will pay a lesser price in the end. Reducing waste can add extra years in which we can live on this planet healthfully.

Visual Arts Reviews by The Arts Desk

In its visual arts coverage this week, The Arts Desk takes a look at imaginary cityscapes, illuminated manuscripts, American art and even art as a form of therapy. Pinterest in a good medium for a concept boards artist.

Fisun Guner was deeply impressed by Andrew Graham-Dixon’s BBC Four programme ‘Art of America’, the first in a series which traces the broad picture of American art, beginning with its colonial past. Graham-Dixon, she concluded, is the master of TV arts programmes, mixing erudition with an easy, light presenting manner, while BBC Four, she pronounced, especially with their sterling visual arts programming, is the only channel worth watching. The episode covered from the first attempts of white settlers – such as the artist John White, who recorded the pastoral wonders he found there in 1585 – to the fragmentary art and artefacts of the Native Americans, to Benjamin West’s paintings of American Independence. The art itself was often crude and rather dull compared to European contemporaries, but more interesting were the stories of the nation that they told, through what they showed and, indeed, what they omitted.

Meanwhile in one of the smaller London galleries, an imaginary city called Nobson Newtown, created by artist Paul Noble, forms the basis of his new exhibition at the Gagosian. It begins with the genesis of Newtown, with Noble creating his own myth for the city, illustrating Bible scenes in his own inimitable way, and then progresses to a huge drawing of the park. Judith Flanders was struck by the obsessive-compulsive quality of Noble’s intricate pencil drawings of this surreal cityscape, with elements of smutty cartoons reminiscent of Robert Crumb and ‘Viz’ thrown in. With his cartographic viewpoint overlooking the city, filled with turd-like men, rubbish and dying shrubbery, Noble comments on the creation, the state and the purpose or our cityscapes. Though the result is not particularly positive, his concentrated attention to detail makes his works compulsive viewing.

As a ‘Culture Show Special’ over Armistice weekend, Tim Samuels presented ‘Art for Heroes’ on BBC Two, dedicated to the invisible wounds of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the new art therapy that attempts to treat it. As archive footage showed, PTSD is nothing new, but it’s only recently been recognised and art therapy is currently available to precious few, though the veterans that Samuels spoke to, both in the UK and America, were entirely convinced of its efficacy, tapping as it does into repressed memories and things that cannot necessarily be verbalised. Though it’s perhaps unnecessary to judge their work by the standards of professional artists, Josh Spero noted that the veterans had just the same drive to create as any other artist and worked in a huge range of styles and abilities, some proving extraordinarily visceral, powerful and moving. The programme, though half an hour too long, culminated in an exhibition for the veterans’ work and left its poignant message that with soldiers returning from Afghanistan, there will soon be many more in need of this kind of therapy.

And finally, in her second art review of the week, Judith Flanders discovered a jewel of an exhibition at the British Library in ‘Royal Manuscripts: The Genius of Illumination’. It’s a collection acquired by the British Museum in 1757 but begun in the 15th century by Edward IV, who was looking to manufacture propaganda through books that celebrated God and through God his sovereigns on earth. The manuscripts, richly painted by master craftsmen of the age, comprise history books, conduct books, maps, mythical tales, bibles and psalters and provide an incredible record of history and courtly life. The scale of the exhibition Flanders found astonishing, with more than 150 manuscripts to look at and excellent digital aids as well. And though the captions are occasionally lacking in historical detail, it’s still a fascinating and beautiful show. As these works spend most of their lives hidden from daylight for preservation purposes, it’s a case of catch them while you can.

Hold a Child’s Birthday Party for Charity

To help you weed through the pack and find the best environmental charities to donate to, read on for our tips and charity recommendations. As a parent, you probably know that the birthday party routine can be an almost painful experience. With about 20 children in your child’s class, going to more than one birthday party in one weekend can occur quite often. If you have more than one child, birthday-party weekends can take over your entire life. Finding the right gift takes hours, wrapping the present and preparing the card is more time. When it is your child’s turn for a birthday party, do you really want to put other parents through the same routine? Will your child really appreciate 20 birthday gifts on top of what you and your family have already given him? Does your child really need more toys?

Teaching our child that it’s just as wonderful to give as it is to receive is almost never easy. But once they understand the concept, the rewards can last a lifetime. As a parent, you probably want to guide your child to become a healthy and ethical adult. How can you lead your child to a healthy future? What kind of activities can you do together as a family that will steer your child towards becoming a compassionate adult? Community service and Volunteerism are your answer. Not only will you show your child that it is “cool” to care for others, but it will also be a wonderful way to get others involved. You can do just that with a charity birthday party.

Firstly, you must discuss this with your child. You can’t just announce to your child that some or all of his gifts will be going to charity. Avoid bribing and coercion, the mission is to get your child enthusiastic about helping others. I suggest the following:

1. Know Your Child and How Much He Can Be Expected to Give – Just because you are enthusiastic to give all of your child’s presents to charity, it doesn’t mean that your child will feel the same way. Again, don’t coerce your child to have a charitable party. Discuss with your child different ways that his party can become a means to give and not only to receive. For example, The child can keep half of his presents and the other half go to charity.

2. Know Your Child and His Interests- Each child has interests that can be converted into a great giving and charitable experience. If your child is interested in art, match them up with an art charity (http://www.artistshelpingchildren.org). If your child is interested in homelessness, match your child’s party up with a homeless shelter. Once your child is matched with the right charity, your child will have a rewarding charity birthday that he will always remember.

3. The Actual Events of The Party Can Be For a Charitable Purpose – Instead of giving away your child’s presents, you can consider holding a charitable project as the entertainment. For example, Charity Making and Stuffing a Teddy Bear Project (http://artistshelpingchildren.org/donateteddybears.html) and donate all of the teddy bears to a local pediatric hospital, orphanage, or shelter.

4. Have Every Child Bring a Used Toy or Item to Give to Charity – Instead of having every child bring a new item to be donated to charity, have everyone bring in a used toy, or other item. These items can then be donated to a non-profit organization. For children who aren’t excited about having a charity party, you can have everyone bring in a small gift for the birthday child in addition to a used item.

5. Remember to Still Make the Event Special for The Birthday Child – Don’t take all gifts away from your child. You must allow your child to still receive gifts from you, family members, and other close people in his life.

6. Meaningful Conversation First – If our child is having a difficult time figuring out what charity he wants to give to, it might be a good idea to watch the news together and see what sparks your child’s interest. Sometimes seeing less fortunate people and suffrage can spark a child into wanting to give. Also, bring up social issues and discuss them with your child.

7. What Do My Parents Do? – Children learn by example. If your child sees you as a giving individual, they will be more likely to want to give of themselves as well. How can you expect your child to give up things that are important to them without giving items yourself. Consider doing something giving at your birthday every year as well.

Can Having a Charitable Birthday Party Really Be Good For My Child?

You bet it can! It has been proven by researchers that a child’s self-esteem is boosted when taking on altruistic responsibilities. When children help others, they will begin to understand that they have the strength to make a real difference in their world…and this is a great feeling. Another enormous benefit of a charitable birthday party is that a child will gain a deeper understanding of the needs and wants of others. Researchers have also noticed that children who volunteer or give charitably might gain increased academic skills, including critical thinking and problem solving skills.
