Swimming Pool Chemicals Directions

Things to do when caring for a pool?

I am still going over all the steps to take to take care of my above ground swimming pool. One question I have is back-washing. I can’t seem to find a straight answer as to how to do it and when. I have a list of when and how to add different chemicals but I need to learn about the back-washing. If anyone knows of a website with a video or even step by step directions how to backwash and when to do it I’d really appreciate getting that information. Thanks
I don’t have a sand filter

Back washing, or back flushing applies to sand filtration systems. When the sand becomes laden with particles, the pressure gauge will indicate a high reading—perhaps color coded “red”—at which point the water flow through the filter should be reversed temporarily (a few minutes) to reestablish the filter surface and rinse away the crud

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swimming_pool_sanitation#Filter_Unit for overview. See http://www.wikihow.com/Vacuum-and-Backwash-Your-Pool-Filter and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZviPApZoYb4 (or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuYUvAwNF8s for D.E. filters) for how to do it.

If you don’t have a sand filter, there’s no need to back flush, and probably no way for your system to do it. Instead, there is a filter cartridge with a separate hair filter. Be sure to check the skimmer screens too. Clean all those out as needed. Usually they should be checked once per day until you get a feel for how often they actually need cleaning, which may take a month or two.
